With the reception of a grant from the Southern California Nevada UCC, we begin a congregational conversation with joy and love about how to be more inclusive and open to the full range of human experience, including people with autism. Netflix’s recent series, Love on the Spectrum, follows a few young people with autism who are looking for companionship, friendship, and love. We get a glimpse into the unique ways they experience life and how their families help them navigate romance.
So many of our workplaces and families now include people who we recognize as neurodiverse, terminology that may not always be familiar. What do we need to understand? How can we recognize that all human beings are created in the image of God and deserve dignity and respect? Can we stay humble, patient, and keep learning about one another? And how do we find reasons to be joyful in the midst of our differences?
You can watch along on the Netflix series. Some quotes will come from Sarah Griffith Lund’s book, Blessed Minds, which we are gearing up for a group read of in the coming months.
